This is not my usual type of book so I feel my review might be skewed. Usually, I like mysteries that a bit more hard-hitting, ones that focus on actual crimes solved by detectives or police. I also very much dislike books that try too hard to be "southern". For those reasons, I am scoring this book pretty low.

Callie is a hairdresser living in Tupelo, Mississippi, during an Elvis festival. As part of that festival, she is the hairdresser for the impersonators. Her sidekick is a basset-hound named Elvis who has his own chapters where he explains he is actually the reincarnated "King". During the festival, someone is killing off the impersonators and Callie takes it upon herself to solve the crime along with her "hot under the sequined collar" cousin. Mixed in is a very mixed-up relationship with her ex-husband who is apparently some sort of mobster. And, then there's her mother, the town kook.

There's a lot going on in this book, a bit too much for everything to get neatly solved by the end. Everyone is such a unique character that everyone comes off as a bit fake. There's never a sense this is more than a silly fiction story. Really, though, I was lost when the dog started talking. That's never a good thing. Never. And, don't even get me started with the fakey southern charm. It's just okay and a series I most certainly won't be reading more of.

Elvis and the Grateful Dead Southern Cousins Mysteries Peggy Webb 9780758225917 Books Reviews

Absolutely hilarious book about adventure and true friendship. Zany ladies and their antics. Their obsession about sweet tea and finger sandwiches,oh and punch, the rum kind, I read two of these books back to back and prob got some things right and maybe one wrong but irregardless a delightful read that I have already recommended to other users.
As soon as I started reading this book, I was hooked. The characters are fun and funny with that sting of truth that brings them to life. The basset hound started out just a basset, but as the story developed you realized there was way more to him that met the eye at first. Under all the fun and fancy, lies a culture and real life experiences put into hilarious perspective. Enjoyed this book thoroughly.
Being owned by two basset hounds, I had to read this book. I loved it. Especially the chapters written in Elvis' point of view. What attitude. What swagger.

I swear Callie and Lovie can get themselves into outrageous situations.

What a cast of characters! They stay with you long after you've finished the story.

I love the relationship with Calli and her ex, Jack. I'm also thinking there is much more to Uncle Charlie then I've seen so far.

Even through the danger I couldn't help but smile.

Read this book. You'll love it even you're not owned by basset hounds.
This book is the 2nd in the series by Peggy Webb (1st Elvis and the Dearly Departed). This book is just as wonderful as the 1st. I was very excited to see what kind of adventures Callie and Lovie get into. If you have a passion for shoes, food and Elvis you will enjoy this book. Webb has created 2 very different but lovable amature slueths in Callie and Lovie. This book, as well as the 1st if pretty fast paced. I usually don't like this type of mystery book, but this one has changed my mind. Webb has a well rounded cast in her books and they really help bring the story to life. I can't wait to read Elvis and the Memphis Mambo Murders
I stumbled onto the "Southern Cousins" mysteries and I'm sure glad that I did. This story is set in Mississippi in the small town of Mooreville just outside of Tupelo, of course the home of Elvis. During this week of the story, Tupelo is having an Elvis Impersonator contest, hosting Elvis's from all over the country. The main characters are Callie and Lovie Valentine, cousins and best friends since birth and Callie's bassett hound Elvis, who believes he is the reincarnation of Elvis Presley himself. These two cousins and the host of other characters of family and friends convene in Tupelo and stumble onto murder. The search for the murderer and the funny predictaments these two find themselves in and of course the thoughts of Elvis are a fun and easy read.
Elvis and Callie are caught up in murder again. This time they have found the body of an Elvis (the human, not the dog) impersonator dead. The town is hopping with Elvis impersonators due to annual Elvis festival and when the bodies start piling up, Callie knows she needs to do something because her cousin and best friend, Lovie, is the main suspect.

I had a blast reading the first book in this series. I found this book entertaining and funny at parts. I also found the stereotypes and sometimes stupidity of the character truly aggravating. I still loved the sections where Elvis' narrators the book but found Callie started grating on my nerves. How can the women take care of herself if she is busy investigating a murder then running her salon? I kept wondering how she could afford to run all over the place, which while is very minor, distracted me.

Callie's continuing obsession with her ex, who again you learn nothing much about, just made me want to slap her and tell her to move on with her life. Callie needs to kick him out of her life completely or take him back. I found it amusing but without depth in the first book. In this book, it bothered me because she still didn't make a choice. The other character, Lovie, for being a women of the world since she has had "more lovers then Elvis had hit" struck me as naïve at parts. The corny humor was still there and parts did make me laugh but I kept waiting for a little more depth in some of the characters.

The mystery in Elvis and the Grateful Dead was quirky and I enjoyed it. This book was an ok fluffy read (fluff is perfectly fine as sometimes I need to read fluff). I found the characters annoying and lacking development in this book so it only gets 3 Stars. I enjoyed it and will probably give the next book a try but I'm not going to rush out and get it
