I very much enjoyed Faith Hunter's Skinwalker novel's and even thought the idea of these books would be a blast, however, it took all my willpower to get through this book. I enjoyed the story, the story idea was great, but it was .... awkward. That's all I can really decidedly say, it's like she tried to bring in too many supernatural elements into being, on one plane and they just, were one big calamity in a world that didn't have enough magic and technology and power to support it all. I felt like, as the reader, I was trapped in this, place where I wanted to shove away from everything, to scramble and run myself, not out of fear, but just so much .... stuff. To tell everyone to, knock it off, go away, shut up, stop it...! I cannot stand when characters do not fall into place as they are previously described to be, I guess. Something was just, off, and I'm lacking a way to put it into words I think.

Bloodring Thorn St Croix Faith Hunter 9780451461087 Books Reviews
Faith Hunter's writing style is very in depth. This isn't a bad thing, but if you aren't accustomed to such detailed and descriptive storylines/plots, it may be a bit exhausting. The only other issue I had with this book is the introduction of so many "others". There are several "others" that are presented in the book and I found it a bit overwhelming to know what species from what, and what mated with what and resulted in ?. The high host, light beings, seraphs, mages/neomages, kylens, daywalkers, demon spawns, and the second-unforeseen, are the only ones that come to mind right now, but I'm sure I'm missing a few others. Couldn't we spread some of these creepy crawlers throughout the series rather than throwing them all in the first book? I hope there aren't more "others" to be introduced later.
Overall the book is good. I really enjoyed the author's creativity with the post-apocalyptic world. And although Thorn is an "other", the author has no qualms revealing her vulnerability. Additionally, there are still mysteries swarming regarding what the seraphs really are, the Enclave, Lola, Audric, Thorn's forgottoned past, and so forth. There's enough curiosity and interest stirring for me to purchase the second installment.
Humans hate fear mages even when they are helping them to survive, humans imprison mages and let them out on occasion only at their directions, half beings hate mages, seraphim bind mages to them for sex and mages go into heat around just about everything. Not till the last few chapters you see what the mage mission is , saves humans and they still hate her. Repetitive mage calling circles she of course has had not training in. Very confusing and not like Faith Hunters other books at all. And the audible read is unbearable to listen to boring monotone
This is a unique story line about a post-apocalyptic world in which the plagues and wars of the book of Revelation have mostly come true, except the arrival of "God the Victorious" never took place. So the world is governed by the Seraphim and there is religious unrest. There is a faction of humans that believe the Seraphim and the Dragons of the Darkness are actually aliens of opposing factions and the humans are just caught in the middle. The mages are an unforeseen element that creates a nice twist to the story. Thorn St. Croix is the main character of these stories (This is the first of the trilogy) and she is a neomage living outside the enclave because she is sensitive to the thoughts of other neomages and can't live in a community of them without going mad from the invasion of their thoughts in her head. She gets mixed up in the battle surrounding the Major Darkness that wants the blood of her ex-husband's family to break the chains that bind it, all the while trying to keep her nature a secret from those around her.
It is a wonderfully well written story and I find myself reading it again and again.
Note This review covers all three books in the Rogue Mage series.
World/universe
I've read many thousands of books and I'll tell you it's been a long, long, time since I read a truly new take on anything. Faith Hunter has done a fantastic job blending post-apocalypse, urban fantasy, romance, science fiction, a bit of the Spanish Inquisition, a dose of theology, and a dash of "something" I can't quite put my finger on, into a what is truly a unique universe.
Some authors go so deep into trying to present how their universe works that the details drown the characters and story line. Others just throw a bunch of things together in such a way that nothing really seems to fit, there isn't any logic, and 'willing suspension of disbelief' become impossible. Ms. Hunter has mastered a superb balance between the two.
As the story and characters develop, enough is revealed about the universe that the reader is able to grasp a good sense of the underlying logic and reality, enough that it all carries a certain kind of sense. This makes some of the more imaginative scenes actually work well, because you have this feeling that if you (or if Thorn) just knew a little more, it would all become understandable. It's actually very tantalizing without ever being so revealing that the mystery is lost. An excellent job!
Characters
Ms. Hunter has done a good job here as well. While not perfect, she did a good job of fleshing out side and supporting characters enough that you become invested in more than just the fate of the prime protagonist. She also manages to keep pulling you in a constant love/hate relationship with several characters, where some times you really wish Thorn could do a little slice-n-dice on them, and other times you are really rooting for them to pull it together!
While there is a clear antagonist in this series, the focus is dispersed somewhat across multiple characters, some whom turn out to not be quite what they appear - both good and bad.
Plot Devices
I don't have a lot to say because I don't want to give a lot away. Ms. Hunter did an excellent job working various plot twists in subtle and unexpected ways, with twists you see coming -- just like the movies you find yourself yelling "NO, DON'T GO IN TH.... oh you IDIOT!". And then as you continue to read and suddenly you're thinking, "wait...WHAT JUST HAPPENED?" (Much like Thorn).
Overall
All in all, while not 100% perfect, I was left sincerely hoping Ms. Hunter will continue the series for at least another trilogy. There is a lot of novel thought here left to explore.
